AT THE FESTIVAL

EXPERIENCE

BAJAWONDERGRASS

El Sargento/La Ventana is a small community on the east coast of Baja California Sur, about 45-minutes south of La Paz - the state’s capital and closest “big” city. La Ventana is the more popular reference point, however, there are actually two separate towns right next to one another: La Ventana and El Sargento. BajaWonderGrass is technically located at La Tuna in El Sargento, but both La Ventana and El Sargento are closely located to the festival site and will offer similar vibes, views, and experiences.

La Ventana is known for its wind and kitesurfing. Between November and March the population grows significantly with avid kitesurfers filling the sky with colorful kites. However, this coastal town was once known as a fishing destination, and we’ve found that there is far more to do here than simply kitesurfing, or foiling, thanks to the incredible Sea of Cortez with its vibrant marine life. From hiking, mountain biking, walking through the cardón cacti forest, dipping in the natural hot springs, spear fishing, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on the beach, the La Ventana and El Sargento BCS area has a LOT going for it, even in the “off” season.

Explore below for what to expect from BajaWonderGrass, and how to enjoy the time after festival hours (we have a feeling you’re going to want to extend your trip).

GETTING

AROUND

Public transportation does not exist, so plan to rent a car, SUV, or bike. Having your own car is definitely the easiest way to get around, especially if you choose to extend your trip and explore the region. Renting a car is not required, however. Many restaurants and convenience stores are within walking distance of the festival site. We recommend renting an ATV or bicycle for easy transport from your lodging.

HIKING + BIKING

Explore the Cardon Cacti Forest:
This is the largest Cacti forest in the world and is native to northwestern Mexico, including the Baja Peninsula. Walk through the “forest” of huge plants (some grow up to 60 feet tall, and weigh up to 25 tons), and read about their many medicinal properties along the way.

To find the forest, head south out of La Ventana on Corredor Isla Cerralvo. Search a Map for the Ventusbay Hotel, which is tucked away inside the forested area. There is a network of sandy tracks around the forest, which can be used for hiking, mountain biking, or driving.

Hike or Bike the Trails:
The biking here is world class! Plus, Hike the Punta Gorda trail. To get there, follow the dirt road that continues up the hill after Hot Springs Beach. Drive for 10 minutes past a few houses, eventually driving alongside the beach again, until you reach a small hut, and find an area to park on the left.

Key Tips:
Use the Trail Forks app to explore the many mountain biking and hiking trails in the area.

KITEBOARDING + SUP + SURF

April is typically the end of the wind season, but you’re welcome to browse kite surfing lessons! We recommend joining Canadian-Mexican couple of BajaSUP for 3 hours of kayak/paddleboard and snorkeling in "The Aquarium of the World.” Includes your guides, all necessary equipment, water and a homemade snack, and complimentary photos.

Surfing: Cerritos Beach (two hours from La Ventana) is a great place to learn, with several surf schools and rentals on the beach. Cerritos can be fun for intermediate and advanced surfing, but Todos Santos, Pescadero, and the East Cape usually deliver better waves. More info Cerritos HERE.
